Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech says he is inspired by the determination of Ryan Mason following his fractured skull injury earlier this year. The player had to undergo surgery at the Saint Mary’s Hospital in London following a clash of heads with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.
Hull City faced the Blues on January 22 last year when the incident happened. Many believed he would not return to the game in playing capacity due to magnitude of damage. This was confirmed on Tuesday that the 26-year old player would no longer play professional football following advice from world renowned neurologist and neurosurgeons.
Cech, whose trademark includes wearing of a head gear, suffered a depressed skull fracture whilst in action for former club Chelsea back in 2006. The experienced shot stopper said Mason should be praised for the way he handled his rehabilitation and even his eventual decision.
“Yesterday was a sad day for one incredible young man .@Ryan Mason. Although his story didn’t finish with ultimate happy ending, his determination, attitude and bravery he’s shown during his recovery is something to be admired and an inspiration for others! All the best Ryan,” Cech posted online (sic).
Cahill also went online to send heart felt messages to the player. He said competing for a corner is something football players do thousands of times but seeing how things ended for Mason is heartbreaking. A lot of top football faces and lots of fans have also send goodwill messages to the player and his family.
