CECH RESPONSIBLE FOR MENDY TRANSFER

Chelsea legend Petr Cech has revealed how he was instrumental to the signing of brilliant shot stopper Edouard Mendy from Rennes in the French Ligue 1. The Blues made a first team goalkeeper signing for the first time in two years with the capture of the Senegalese international in the summer. The Blues paid £22m to secure his transfer and he has been able to provide stability to the goalkeeping department at Chelsea.

The West London giants had issues in the goalkeeping department until his arrival. With goalkeepers KepaArrizabalaga and Willy Caballero not at the level required, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had to delve into the transfer market to provide a long-term solution to the problem.

Cech spoke about Edouard Mendy in a chat with French newspaper L’Equipe. According to Chelsea’s technical advisor, Mendy was the best on the list of goalkeepers that were under consideration in the summer. Petr Cech revealed that he has been following Mendy for three-and-a-half years dating back to when he was at Reims in France.
Edouard Mendy has taken the career path of Premier League great Petr Cech following his transfer from Rennes to Chelsea. Petr Cech left Rennes to Chelsea in the summer of 2004 and the retired Czech Republic international went on to winthe Premier League title in his first two seasons at the club. Cech was also crucial to the Blues as they recorded their first and only Champions League title triumph during the 2011/12 season.
The former shot stopper left Chelsea for Arsenal in the summer of 2015 in a £10m deal. He spent four years at Arsenal, winning two FA Cup titles with the Gunners before hanging up his gloves in 2019. He returned to Chelsea as a technical director shortly after his retirement though he could still play again after he was surprisingly named in the Chelsea squad for the Premier League this season.
