Chelsea’s technical adviser Petr Cech believes Fikayo Tomori has proved his worth to the Blues’ first-team and he deserved to stay put with the club this summer. The England youth international was touted to make a temporary move to Everton before the Premier League transfer deadline but that was not the case after the surprise departure of David Luiz to Arsenal.
He told: “Just like the defender Tomori. The plan was for him to get ready with the first-team and leave on loan, but that took a different direction. He deserved to stay. Young people here don’t play because they are young, but because they deserve it. It’s all about how they are in their head, how much the kid is able to overcome obstacles and not be fooled by the rumour saying he already belongs to Real Madrid and not on loan.”
Despite Tomori’s consistency, the Blues have not produced a collective performance to satisfy the club’s faithful. While there has been plenty of excitement with the emergence of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham upfront, the same can’t be said about the defence, where the odd positional mistake which has cost them dearly. The west London club are currently 11th on the table but they are still just three points adrift of the top four places. They are scheduled to host Grimsby Town in the League Cup third round on Wednesday night before tackling Brighton & Hove Albion at home in the Premier League three days later.
