CECH’S ROLE IN MENDY TRANSFER SWOOP REVEALED

Former Chelsea goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon has revealed the role played by club legend Petr Cech in the pursuit of Edouard Mendy in the summer of 2020.Lollichon spoke to media outlet Foot Mercato about the role Petr Cech played on the way to the signing of Mendy from French top flight team Rennes two years ago.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard needed an upgrade in the goalkeeping area at the time. Spanish international KepaArrizabalaga was the first choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge and the Blues eventually signed an upgrade on him in Senegalese international shot stopper Mendy.

On Petr Cech, Lollichon said the Czech was still at Arsenal when he told him to watch Mendy and tell him what he thinks about the goalkeeper. At the time, Mendy was playing his first matches at Reims in the second tier of club football in France at the time.

Lollichon confirmed his departure from Chelsea earlier this weekhaving worked with Cechfor several years at the club. He has worked closely with the retired Czech Republic international over the years. Lollichon has served in several roles at Chelsea over the years. He has worked as a loan coach, recruitment advisor amongst others.
When Lampard and Chelsea needed a new goalkeeper, Lollichon reminded Cech about Mendy. He told him to watch the Senegalese national team player in his capacity as the technical director since the club needed a new shot stopper.
Mendy has been a good signing for Chelsea since his arrival at the club in 2020. In his first season at Stamford Bridge, Mendy played a major role as Chelsea won their second Champions League title by beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final. Kai Havertz scored in the first half to give Chelsea the win at the expense of their Premier League rivals.
