CECH – ROONEY IS MY TOUGHEST OPPONENT

Premier League legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech has named Wayne Rooney as the most challenging opponents he faced in his career. The former Chelsea and Arsenal shot stopper won four Premier League titles and the famous 2012 Champions League tile with the Blues before his switch to the Emirates in 2015. He retired in 2019 and returned to Chelsea as Technical and Performance Advisor.

The former Czech Rep star said Roney was always unpredictable with the ball and also very clever so he had to be wary of him whenever he faced Manchester United. He explained that the Englishman was one that could shoot from the halfway line and score, try and chip the ball if a keeper is too far off his line, chase and fight opponents and shoot the ball cleverly.

Cech said it was challenging when he faced Rooney, making the duel enjoyable. On the Chelsea vs United Champions League clash, he said he does not wish for a different outcome. The game ended 1-1 in regular time before United won the penalty shootout in Moscow. Edwin van der Sar was incredible in goal, going on to win the UEFA Man of the Match award.

Cech said the clash against Barcelona where many felt they were robbed, the heartache after losing in Moscow and other experiences gave him extra strength as he took it the right way.
Chelsea went on to win theirs in Munich, defeating Bayern Munich in their city with a famous Didier Drogba finish. He said the team gave the game their best despite nothing expected of them due to the poor state of the team. He said defenders were injured, four players suspended but they remained resilient. He added that his penalty save of Arjen Robben’s kick was the best of his career.
Cech says he enjoyed the experience all over and would not change a thing.
